Synopsis

In a desert land inspired by the world of the Arabian Nights, a desert spirit has taken hold of the young king Lo-Melkhiin, and each month he marries a new bride and kills the previous one. By the time the story opens, three hundred girls have died. When he comes to the narrator's village, her beautiful sister is the one expected to be chosen, so the narrator, an unnamed girl, steps forward in her place and goes to the palace to save her. Her family has long prayed to her as a small household goddess, and she carries that devotion with her. She sets out to survive the king, learn what lies behind him, and stop the killing, using the stories she tells him night after night.
