Synopsis
Acacia: The War with the Mein, published by David Anthony Durham in 2007, opens the Acacia trilogy. Leodan Akaran rules the prosperous island realm of Acacia from a position of apparent stability, keeping his four children largely sheltered from the illicit trade in drugs and slaves that quietly underwrites the empire's wealth. When assassins working for the long-exiled Mein people strike directly at the heart of the kingdom, Leodan is forced to act quickly, orchestrating his children's separate escapes before the full scope of the attack becomes clear. Scattered across the world and cut off from each other and from the empire they were raised to inherit, the Akaran children must each find their own way to survive, navigating hidden allegiances, ancient magic, and the uncomfortable truths about their family's foundations that their father worked so hard to keep from them.
