Synopsis
In the river city of Amberlight, the great Houses grow rich from their monopoly on qherrique, a pearl-like stone that powers minds and machines. Tellurith, head of Telluir House, finds an outlander beaten and left for dead in the street. An oracle declares that he must not be allowed to die. He has lost his memory, and the story turns on a threat to the qherrique on which the city's power depends. As rival Houses scheme, Tellurith shelters him and is drawn into intrigue, unrest and the approach of war, while a deeper mystery connects her to the stranger.
