Synopsis
The third novel of the Word and Void trilogy takes place around Christmas of 2012, reuniting John Ross and Nest Freemark a decade after their last encounter. Ross experiences a prophetic vision revealing that a rare magical being called a Gypsy Morph is forming in the present day, an entity capable of becoming a powerful tool for either the Word or the Void depending on who unlocks its secret, and doomed to vanish within a month if its nature is not discovered first. After the Morph settles into the form of a four-year-old boy, Ross brings it to Hopewell, Illinois, seeking the help of Nest Freemark, now twenty-nine and a former Olympic runner living in her childhood home.

Notes
- From the series record (Word & Void): Contemporary-set (1990s Illinois) prequel trilogy; the ultimate origin of the saga's magic and antagonists. Treated as Core per Brooks' own unified reading order, despite the non-Four-Lands setting.
Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within the series Word & Void: position 3 of 3: previous A Knight of the Word (1998)
- Internal chronology, within Shannara: position 3 of 32: previous A Knight of the Word (1998) · next Armageddon's Children (2006)
