Synopsis
FitzChivalry Farseer and his companions set out to rescue Fitz's daughter Bee, who has been taken captive and transported toward the distant, secretive fortress of Clerres. The narrative alternates between Fitz's desperate pursuit across hostile territory, accompanied by the ailing Fool, and Bee's own struggle to survive captivity and come to terms with her emerging magical abilities while held among strangers who see her as a means to an end. Their separate paths gradually converge as both draw closer to the stronghold and the powerful figures who rule it, forcing Fitz to confront enemies whose reach and ambitions extend far beyond anything the Six Duchies ever prepared him for.
