Robin Hobb was born Margaret Astrid Lindholm on March 5, 1952, in Berkeley, California, and attended the University of Denver for one year without completing a degree. She began publishing short fiction in 1979 under the name Megan Lindholm, working as a waitress and in mail delivery while raising four children, and published her first novel at age thirty. In 1995 she adopted the pen name Robin Hobb to write fantasy with a male first-person narrator, a shift that brought her a wider readership. Under that name she is best known for the interconnected Realm of the Elderlings sequence (1995-2017), comprising the Farseer, Liveship Traders, Tawny Man, Rain Wild Chronicles, and Fitz and the Fool trilogies, alongside earlier work as Megan Lindholm including the urban fantasy Wizard of the Pigeons (1986) and the Soldier Son trilogy. As of 2018 her fiction had been translated into 22 languages with more than 4 million copies sold. She won the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2021, and the David Gemmell Award and Endeavour Award for her novels as Robin Hobb.
