Synopsis

Her Father's Sword is a Robin Hobb short story set in the Six Duchies during the early days of the Red Ship War, as the region first begins to grapple with the horror of Forging, the Raiders' practice of stripping victims of empathy and humanity. Its central figure is Taura, a girl from the coastal village of Smokerscot, whose community lies exposed to the raids sweeping the coastline during this period. The story also features an appearance by FitzChivalry, tying it into the wider Farseer timeline familiar from Hobb's novels. Focused on a single young protagonist facing a very personal loss and threat rather than the kingdom-level politics of the main books, the story offers a ground-level view of how ordinary coastal families experienced the Red Ship War's earliest, most disorienting days.
