Synopsis
Shaman's Crossing follows Nevare Burvelle, a young noble in the kingdom of Gernia destined for a military career, as he begins formal training at the King's Cavalla Academy in hopes of becoming a cavalry officer like his father before him. His path there is complicated from the start by prejudice from the established aristocracy toward his family's newer noble title, by unsettling dreams that seem to carry meaning beyond ordinary nightmares, and by an early encounter with the Speck people, a group whose magic and territory lie at the edge of Gernian expansion. That encounter sets in motion supernatural forces that will follow Nevare through his time at the academy, beginning the first book of the Soldier Son trilogy's examination of colonial ambition colliding with a magic Gernia does not understand.
