Overview
The Soldier Son Trilogy is a military fantasy series by Robin Hobb, comprising Shaman's Crossing (2005), Forest Mage (2006), and Renegade's Magic (2007). It follows Nevare Burvelle, the second son of a newly ennobled cavalry officer in the expansionist kingdom of Gernia, raised from childhood for a soldier's career under his culture's rigid caste expectations. As Gernia pushes its frontier into the territory of the Specks, a forest-dwelling people defended by ancient magic, Nevare's body and sense of self are claimed by that same magic, splitting his identity and forcing him to live simultaneously as a soldier of the encroaching empire and as an unwilling vessel of the people it is trying to destroy. The trilogy is a deliberate departure from Hobb's better-known Realm of the Elderlings setting, sharing no characters or geography with it, and uses its colonial-frontier premise to examine complicity, bodily autonomy, and the costs of empire more directly than her earlier work.
