Synopsis
"Homecoming" is a Robin Hobb novella set in the Realm of the Elderlings, told through the diary entries of Lady Carillion Carrock. It takes place during the earliest days of Rain Wilds settlement, following the first Jamaillian colonists as they arrive in the harsh, unfamiliar territory that will eventually become the Rain Wild Traders' homeland. Written as a first-person chronicle rather than straightforward narration, the story captures Carillion's shifting perspective as privilege and expectation collide with the brutal realities of carving out a new life in a dangerous, half-explored wilderness. Functioning as a prequel to the Liveship Traders trilogy, it is not required reading before that series but deepens its backstory, showing readers how the Rain Wilds came to be settled and hinting at the strange transformations the land will eventually work on its people.
