Synopsis
"Blue Boots" is a Robin Hobb short story set during the same period as Assassin's Apprentice and Royal Assassin. It follows Timbal, a young kitchen worker at Timberrock Keep who is still grieving the recent death of her father. Her most treasured possession is a pair of blue boots he bought her shortly before he died, an object that anchors much of her sense of who she is within the household. The story centers on Timbal's growing feelings for Azen, a traveling minstrel who arrives to entertain the keep's lord and lady, and on how a servant girl navigates attraction to someone from a very different, more mobile walk of life. Written for the anthology Songs of Love and Death, it is a quieter, character-focused entry in the Realm of the Elderlings, set far from the series' court intrigue and dragons.
