Synopsis

Harpy's Flight, published by Robin Hobb under the name Megan Lindholm in 1983, opens the Windsingers series, also known as the Ki and Vandien Quartet. Ki is a teamster left devastated after harpies kill her husband and children, and rather than remain among her late husband's people to grieve in the expected way, she chooses solitude, taking to the road alone with her wagon and team. Determined to avenge her family, she climbs to a remote harpy nest and kills a female harpy along with its eggs, then flees when discovered, aware that the surviving male will hunt her in turn. On the road she encounters Vandien, a penniless, starving swordsman caught attempting to steal one of her horses, and despite her wariness the two become uneasy traveling companions just as the vengeful harpy closes in on them both.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Windsingers): Also known as the Ki and Vandien Quartet, published under the author's Megan Lindholm pen name; her 4th universe in this canon, alongside Realm of the Elderlings, the Soldier Son Trilogy (both as Robin Hobb), and Wizard of the Pigeons (also as Megan Lindholm). Confirmed genuinely separate from all three: no shared characters, setting, or continuity.
