Synopsis

Athyra shifts away from Vlad Taltos's usual first-person narration to follow Savn, a Teckla youth apprenticed to a physicker in the rural village of Smallcliff, where Vlad has arrived as a fugitive from the Jhereg. After Vlad is ambushed by the local lord's guards, Savn saves his life and hides him, and Vlad, in return, begins teaching the boy something of witchcraft while pursuing an agenda of his own. Vlad reveals that he means to confront Loraan, the Baron of Smallcliff, whom he believes to be an undead necromancer working with the Jhereg against him. Savn's sister Polyi helps look after Vlad as he recovers, while Savn is gradually drawn into Vlad's world and forced to question where his loyalties lie, especially once he begins to suspect that Vlad has used magic on his own family to secure his cooperation.

Notes

  • From the series record (Vlad Taltos): 17 novels (1983-2024) of a planned 19-book structure (17 House-named books + Taltos, named for the protagonist, + a final closing volume, The Last Contract, not yet written; Chreotha, the 18th, is also not yet written). Internal chronology is contested among fan sources and explicitly not recorded here, see the notes on Jhereg.

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series Vlad Taltos: position 6 of 17: previous Phoenix (1990) · next Orca (1996)
