Synopsis
Orca finds Vlad Taltos a fugitive from the Jhereg organization, still caring for Savn, the traumatized Teckla boy from the previous book, and in need of money to pay for the youth's ongoing treatment. Vlad turns to his old friend Kiera the Thief, asking her to steal documents relating to a deed that could cover the cost, a favor tied to the recent, suspicious death of a wealthy businessman named Fyres. What begins as a simple theft draws Vlad and Kiera into investigating Fyres's death and the tangled state of his finances, uncovering signs of corruption among investigators and government officials, and pulling in Fyres's own daughters and an influential Jhereg contact named Stony.

Notes
- From the series record (Vlad Taltos): 17 novels (1983-2024) of a planned 19-book structure (17 House-named books + Taltos, named for the protagonist, + a final closing volume, The Last Contract, not yet written; Chreotha, the 18th, is also not yet written). Internal chronology is contested among fan sources and explicitly not recorded here, see the notes on Jhereg.
Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
