Synopsis

Dragon follows Vlad, still an Easterner operative for the Jhereg, as he is pulled into a territorial war fought by House Dragon, related through a non-linear structure that moves between three timelines converging on a single decisive battle. After a Dragon wizard is killed, Vlad is hired to help guard a cache of magical weapons; when an unremarkable-looking greatsword among them is stolen by an ambitious rival Dragonlord named Fornia, Vlad's patron Morrolan declares war to reclaim it. Despite his reluctance to become a soldier, Vlad commits himself to the coming conflict alongside Morrolan's forces, assisted by the psychic Hawklord Daymar. As the fighting looms, Vlad must adapt his skills as an assassin and schemer to the very different demands of open warfare, while the narrative's shifting timeline gradually reveals how the seemingly ordinary sword became the flashpoint for a war between Dragonlords.

  • From the series record (Vlad Taltos): 17 novels (1983-2024) of a planned 19-book structure (17 House-named books + Taltos, named for the protagonist, + a final closing volume, The Last Contract, not yet written; Chreotha, the 18th, is also not yet written). Internal chronology is contested among fan sources and explicitly not recorded here, see the notes on Jhereg.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
