Synopsis
Banewreaker is set in the world of Urulat and opens the two-volume Sundering duology, which retells a Lord of the Rings-style epic quest narrative from the perspective of the side conventionally cast as the villains. The novel follows the followers and allies of Satoris, a fallen god marked as the source of evil in Urulat's mythology, as a band of ostensibly heroic figures sets out on a quest against him modeled closely on familiar epic-fantasy tropes. By foregrounding the point of view of characters most of Urulat regards as monstrous or evil, the novel reframes the expected quest structure as a tragedy, inviting sympathy for the side that seems destined to lose, and opens with an epigraph from Milton's Paradise Lost that signals its interest in retelling a familiar story of damnation and defiance from the other side.
