Synopsis
In the third book of the Circle Reforged series, Briar, his teacher Rosethorn, and his student Evvy are visiting a temple in the mountain region of Gyongxe when they are drawn into the escalating tensions of a foreign empire's planned invasion of the area. An emperor's summer palace and army become the backdrop for the unfolding conflict, and Briar's protective magical bond with one of the emperor's young soldiers pulls him directly into the fighting rather than leaving him a bystander. The book follows Briar, Rosethorn and Evvy as they try to safeguard the temple community they have come to know while caught between opposing armies, with Briar forced to reckon with the cost of using his magic in outright war.
