Synopsis
Set eight years after the events of the first novel, this third installment of the Graceling Realm follows eighteen-year-old Bitterblue, now queen of a Monsea still recovering from the devastation wrought by her tyrannical father, King Leck. Suspecting that her advisors are keeping her deliberately uninformed and treating her as little more than a figurehead, Bitterblue disguises herself as an ordinary servant to slip out into her own city and learn the true condition of her kingdom firsthand. As she investigates, she uncovers disturbing secrets about her father's reign and comes to suspect that her closest advisors may be complicit in concealing the truth, even as she meets a band of underground truth-seekers working to restore what Leck's rule destroyed.

Notes
- From the series record (Graceling Realm): A young-adult secondary-world fantasy sequence about people born with a superhuman 'Grace' in a single specialized skill. Fire (2009) is a prequel set ~35 years before Graceling, in the neighboring land of the Dells; Bitterblue (2012) is a direct sequel to Graceling; Winterkeep (2021) and Seasparrow (2022) continue Bitterblue's story further north. Each book is independently readable per the author's own site, but all 5 share one continuous world and are registered as one universe. No 6th book has been announced; treated as a completed 5-book sequence.
