Synopsis

Decades after the events of the first two novels, Colin is now an adult professor of radio astronomy suffering from amnesia that blocks all memory of anything before age thirteen, including the childhood adventures at Alderley Edge and the twin sister, Susan, he can no longer recall having. Convinced that recovering his lost memories is essential to his own sanity, he works with a psychotherapist to excavate what happened to him as a boy, in a narrative interwoven with a parallel, wordless story following a Stone Age shaman navigating his own crisis on the same landscape thousands of years earlier. As Colin's sessions progress, the boundary between his fragmented memories, the earlier books' events and the ancient shaman's world grows increasingly difficult to separate.

Notes

  • From the series record (Tales of Alderley): A genuinely 52-year sequence: the first two novels (1960, 1963) are children's fantasy set around Alderley Edge, Cheshire; Boneland (2012) is a distinct, more literary adult novel revisiting the same characters decades later -- Garner's own explicit closing volume, per Wikipedia. Internal chronology matches publication order.

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings, but they resolve to the exact same sequence for this book, so one combined line is shown instead of two identical ones.

  • Reading order, within the series Tales of Alderley: position 3 of 3: previous The Moon of Gomrath (1963)
