Synopsis

Brisingr, the third novel in the Inheritance Cycle, begins roughly three days after the events of Eldest, on the continent of Alagaesia, where the oppressive Broddring Empire remains locked in a power struggle against the rebel Varden, the nation of Surda, and their allies among the elves, dwarves, and Urgals. Eragon, one of the last remaining Dragon Riders after Galbatorix's earlier purge of the order, continues working alongside his dragon Saphira, his cousin Roran, and Varden leader Nasuada toward the shared goal of overthrowing the king who seized power and now rules as a tyrant. The story is told through multiple perspectives, including those of Saphira and the elder dragon Glaedr, and follows the group's efforts to rescue a captive ally, undertake a diplomatic mission concerning succession among the dwarves, and continue Eragon's magical training.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Inheritance Cycle): A farm boy in the land of Alagaesia finds a dragon egg and is drawn into a rebellion against the tyrant king Galbatorix; the original quartet, self-published by the author in 2002 before Knopf's 2003 edition.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The Inheritance Cycle: position 3 of 4: previous Eldest (2005) · next Inheritance (2011)
  • Internal chronology, within The Inheritance Cycle: position 3 of 5: previous Eldest (2005) · next Inheritance (2011)
