Synopsis

In the fourth Peter Grant novel, a routine traffic accident brings Peter Grant and DCI Thomas Nightingale to the scene of a crash in which human blood is discovered inside the vehicle, a discovery that soon connects to a hidden murder victim. Their investigation traces links between the suspect and former members of an Oxford University dining society who once received magical training, as well as a formidable Soviet-era witch operating on the fringes of their case. The pair grow convinced that a modern residential tower called Skygarden lies at the center of the mystery, with Peter theorizing that the building itself may have been constructed as a large-scale magical experiment. To get closer to the truth, and to the group's recurring adversary known as the Faceless Man, Peter goes undercover among the tower's residents while the team quietly prepares magical defenses against an escalating threat.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
