Synopsis

In the third Peter Grant novel, the Metropolitan Police's resident apprentice wizard investigates the killing of an American art student at Baker Street Underground station, who is found dead from wounds inflicted with a fragment of pottery. Following leads that connect an Irish sculptor and a pottery manufacturer to the victim, Grant's inquiry leads him beneath London's streets, where he discovers a hidden, long-established community of supernatural beings known as the Quiet People, who have lived in the city's tunnels since Victorian times. As he works to untangle the professional rivalries and unexpected relationships linking the victim to this underground world, Grant must navigate a secret society existing just out of sight of ordinary London, all while the case's magical dimensions grow more apparent.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
