Synopsis
Dallas police detective Mark Valdez is a psychic investigating a string of cattle mutilations and torture murders that he senses are connected, though the case has stayed beyond his ability to crack alone. He teams up with Diana Tregarde, a romance novelist who is secretly a witch and a Guardian sworn to protect the Earth from supernatural threats, after her own abilities draw her attention to the killings. Together they trace the murders to a danger rooted in ancient Aztec myth, working to identify and stop whoever, or whatever, is orchestrating the deaths before the ritual behind them can be completed, while Mark and Diana's differing approaches to the supernatural, one from law enforcement, one from witchcraft, are forced to find common ground.

Notes
- From the series record (Diana Tregarde): Three core novels follow psychic romance-novelist/witch Diana Tregarde investigating supernatural threats. Assorted short stories, novellas and omnibus/collected editions of this series exist but are kept out of Core as supplementary material, not part of the numbered novel sequence, following the same precedent already applied to Emily Windsnap's companion material.
