Synopsis
In this Kencyrath novel, Jame Knorth -- master thief, fighter, and the emerging avatar of the god That-Which-Destroys -- returns to the city of Tai-tastigon, where she once lived, to find it beset by a crisis of souls being drained from its people and its gods. The self-serving, beguiling demigod who leads the city's Thieves Guild coerces Jame into helping him by holding hostage people she loves, forcing her to search for the missing soul of his own brother rather than pursue her own affairs. As she investigates, Jame is drawn deeper into the boundary between life and death and closer to confronting the encroaching threat of Perimal Darkling that has followed her from her former home into the city she once called her own.
