Synopsis

Call of the Bone Ships, the second novel in the Tide Child trilogy, picks up roughly a year after the events of The Bone Ships, with Shipwife Meas Gilbryn and her crew still serving aboard the black ship Tide Child. The story opens as they discover a brownbone vessel whose hold is packed with people, most of them already dead, a grim find that draws the crew into an investigation of who these people were, where they were being taken, and why. Following the leads uncovered from this discovery pulls the Tide Child's crew into a wider and more dangerous plot than they anticipated, one that puts pressure on their existing loyalties even as the return of dragons to the Hundred Isles raises new questions about what the reappearance of these creatures might mean for the region's long war.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Tide Child Trilogy): New author record. A completed grimdark nautical fantasy trilogy (the 'Tide Child' bone-ships crew), per Carlos's own named grimdark theme. The Bone Ships WON the 2020 British Fantasy Award's Robert Holdstock Award for Best Fantasy Novel -- a clean, independently sourced win (Wikipedia's own Tide Child trilogy page, corroborated by the book's own current cover copy, 'Winner of the Holdstock Award for Best Fantasy Novel'), not merely a nomination.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
