Synopsis

When the Tha'alani, a minority race of telepaths, are suspected of causing a near-devastating tidal wave, Private Kaylin Neya of the Hawks is summoned to Court, and into a public-relations nightmare. To ease racial tensions the Emperor has commissioned a play, and its playwright has his own ideas about who should be at its centre. Kaylin tries to stay neutral and work behind the scenes, but she is drawn again into a world of politics and murder, and to make matters worse Marcus, her trusted sergeant, is stripped of his command, leaving her vulnerable. Now she is juggling two troubling cases at once, a murder investigation and a theatrical production staged for the Emperor, and even her dreaded magic lessons start to look good by comparison. But then nobody ever said life in the theatre was easy. The fourth novel of the Chronicles of Elantra, set in the city of the Dragon Emperor.
