Synopsis
Stolen goods were so much easier. Still avoiding her magic lessons whenever possible, Private Kaylin Neya of the Hawks, the force that polices the City of Elantra, relishes the prospect of investigating a run-of-the-mill theft. Then she finds out that the mysterious stolen box was taken from Elani Street, where true mages and charlatans mingle and it is sometimes hard to tell the difference between the two. In a back room there she sees a lost-looking girl in a reflective pool, who calls out for her help. Shaken, Kaylin tries to stay focused on the case, but the stolen box is ancient, has no keyhole and holds a tremendous darkness inside, and she knows that unknown forces are once again playing with her destiny, and her life. The investigation also draws her closer to the Tha'alani, the city's race of telepaths, whom she has long feared. The third Chronicles of Elantra novel.
