Synopsis

Changes is the twelfth novel, opening when Harry Dresden's former lover Susan Rodriguez tells him he has an eight-year-old daughter, Maggie, and that she has just been kidnapped by Duchess Arianna Ortega, widow of a Red Court vampire lord, who plans to use the child in a blood curse against Dresden's entire bloodline. With his office destroyed, his apartment firebombed and his back broken in the opening chapters, Dresden is left with almost nothing, and, out of options, accepts the mantle of Winter Knight from Queen Mab in exchange for healing and the power to fight back. Racing to find Maggie before the Red Court can complete their ritual, he turns to every ally, favor and resource still open to him, setting him on a collision course with the Red King and the full might of the Red Court.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Dresden Files): 18-novel main sequence (2000-2026, ongoing), narrated throughout by wizard-detective Harry Dresden. Publication order equals in-story chronological order for the entire main sequence. Peace Talks and Battle Ground (both 2020) were originally written as a single novel that grew too long and was split into two by the publisher, released 2.5 months apart, a genuine bibliographic quirk, not a numbering error. A 19th novel (Mirror Mirror) is announced for 2027 but unpublished and is not registered.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings, but they resolve to the exact same sequence for this book, so one combined line is shown instead of two identical ones.

  • Reading order, within the series The Dresden Files: position 12 of 18: previous Turn Coat (2009) · next Ghost Story (2011)
