Synopsis
The twelfth short-story collection in the Valdemar series brings together twenty stories from twenty-three authors, mixing established genre writers such as Janny Wurts and Fiona Patton with newer voices, alongside a new story from Mercedes Lackey herself titled "Woman's Need Calls Me." The stories are organized around different characters and ongoing miniseries, following Heralds, Bards, Healers, Weavers, and Watchmen as they face choices that test their duties and relationships within the kingdom. As with the rest of the anthology series, there is no single continuous plot; instead the collection offers a set of independent tales exploring how various residents of Valdemar, from seasoned Heralds like Rinton to lesser-known figures, navigate protection, responsibility, and personal growth.
