Synopsis
Alan Caranac, a young ethnologist returning from Africa, learns that an old friend has apparently killed himself. He soon finds that other wealthy New Yorkers have died in the same way, and that the dead men are connected to an old Breton family and to a shadowy woman, Dahut de Keradel. Caranac's search leads him into old sacrificial rites, a figure called the Gatherer Within the Cairn, and a hidden netherworld. Dr. Lowell and the gangster Ricori from the earlier case return to help him in supporting roles.
