Synopsis

Crown of Thunder picks up after the events of Beasts Made of Night, with Taj having escaped the city of Kos and the control of the mage Karima, but far from safe as a fugitive. Karima remains a persistent and ruthless threat, willing to hurt innocent people to get to Taj, and has turned his former best friend Bo against him, adding personal betrayal to the danger he already faces. Traveling with fellow aki and allied mages, including Aliya, Taj discovers a community called the tastahlik, where sin-eaters are treated with respect and have refined their abilities far beyond anything possible under Kos's system, even as he continues to wrestle with guilt, survivor's remorse and uncertainty over how to use his powers. The novel follows Taj as he is pulled between self-preservation and the pull of fighting for the people, aki and otherwise, that Kos left behind.

Notes

  • From the series record (Beasts Made of Night): Complete YA fantasy duology set in the walled city of Kos, where sin-eaters called aki draw the physical sins of others into their own bodies as sin-beasts. Confirmed a separate, unrelated universe from Tochi Onyebuchi's Harmattan Season.
