Synopsis

The second His Fair Assassin novel shifts its focus to Sybella, a fellow assassin trained at the convent of St. Mortain and introduced in the previous book. Ordered to return to the household of her father, the tyrannical nobleman d'Albret, she is tasked with spying on him amid the same fifteenth-century Brittany political crisis threatening the young duchess. Her assignment forces her back into the site of her own traumatic childhood, testing her composure as an assassin serving the god of Death while surrounded by the man she has long feared. Amid the mission, Sybella unexpectedly becomes responsible for rescuing a captured knight loyal to Brittany, the Beast of Waroch, drawing her further into danger even as she works to gather the intelligence the convent and the duchy need from inside her father's own house.

Notes

  • From the series record (His Fair Assassin): Each novel follows a different daughter of the convent of Saint Mortain in an alternate-history medieval Brittany; read as one continuous trilogy rather than three independent standalones.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series His Fair Assassin: position 2 of 3: previous Grave Mercy (2012) · next Mortal Heart (2014)
