Synopsis

Concluding the His Fair Assassin trilogy, Mortal Heart turns to Annith, a young woman raised and highly trained at the convent of St. Mortain, the ancient god of death, alongside Ismae and Sybella from the earlier books. Rather than being sent out as an assassin like her convent sisters, Annith is instead told she has been chosen to become the convent's next Seeress, a role she never wanted and feels is being forced on her against her calling. Rebelling against this decision, she flees the convent to find her own path, hoping to reach Brittany's young duchess and help defend the duchy from the looming threat of French invasion. On her journey she crosses paths with the mysterious Balthazaar, a Hellequin figure whose presence adds a further supernatural thread to Annith's search for purpose and freedom.

Notes

  • From the series record (His Fair Assassin): Each novel follows a different daughter of the convent of Saint Mortain in an alternate-history medieval Brittany; read as one continuous trilogy rather than three independent standalones.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series His Fair Assassin: position 3 of 3: previous Dark Triumph (2013)
