Synopsis
Dead Until Dark is Charlaine Harris's 2001 urban fantasy novel, the first in The Southern Vampire Mysteries. Set in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps in the early 2000s, shortly after vampires have publicly revealed themselves to humanity following the invention of synthetic blood, the novel follows Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress at Merlotte's bar who has spent her life struggling to live with her unwanted ability to hear other people's thoughts. Her life changes when Bill Compton, a vampire whose mind she cannot read, walks into the bar, and the two are drawn into a romance that offers Sookie a rare escape from the constant noise of the people around her.
