Synopsis
The second Southern Vampire Mysteries novel opens with telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse making a grim discovery: the body of her friend and coworker Lafayette in the back seat of a car belonging to local detective Andy Bellefleur. Before she can dwell long on the killing, vampire leader Eric Northman and Sookie's boyfriend Bill Compton bring her another job, this time recruited by the vampires of Dallas, led by Stan Davis, to help locate a missing member of their community named Farrell who has been gone for five days. Sookie agrees to lend her telepathic abilities to the search on one condition: any humans found responsible must face human justice rather than vampire retribution.
