Synopsis

The land of Wlachkis, ringed by the Sorkata mountains, is bitterly contested: its native Wlachaks have been oppressed for two hundred years by the warlike Masrids, and most of the conquered land is ruled with an iron fist by the Masrid tyrant Zorpad. Zorpad has the young rebel Sten cal Dabrân locked in a metal cage and abandoned in the deep forest to die. Then a band of trolls comes by and takes him with them; at first they mean to eat him, but their clever leader Druan believes that Sten can help them, and an absurd alliance forms between the trolls and the rebel, growing stronger as they come to suspect that they share a common enemy. Despite the title, the protagonist is human.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
