Synopsis

Dodder, Baldmoney, Cloudberry and Sneezewort, the last four gnomes in England, are tucked up for the winter in their home under the old oak by the Folly Brook when a frantic knocking wakes them: the Folly is drying up, and the brook that has given them food and shelter all their lives will soon be gone. They have no choice but to pack up their belongings and leave. Setting off in their boat, the Jeanie Deans, they travel down the bright stream into the great river beyond, in search of a new home where they can live in safety, and their journey turns toward the sea and the distant island the birds call Woodcock's Island.
