Overview

BB's two novels about Dodder, Baldmoney, Sneezewort and Cloudberry, the last four gnomes in England, who live under an oak on the bank of the Folly Brook in Warwickshire. The Little Grey Men (1942) follows three of the brothers upstream in a boat of their own making to find the fourth, who set off to seek the brook's source and never returned; Down the Bright Stream (1948) sends all four downriver in search of a new home when the Folly dries up. The author, the naturalist and artist Denys Watkins-Pitchford, illustrated both himself, and the books are as much about the English countryside through the seasons as about the gnomes. The first won the Carnegie Medal.
