Synopsis

Dragon Rider is the first novel in the Dragon Rider series. It follows a young silver dragon named Firedrake, who lives hidden with his fellow dragons in a secluded valley that humans are planning to flood as part of a dam project, threatening to destroy their last refuge. Learning that his home is no longer safe, Firedrake sets out on a journey to find the Rim of Heaven, a legendary hidden valley said to be a lasting sanctuary for dragons, said to lie somewhere in the Himalayas. He is joined by Sorrel, a brownie with a fondness for mushrooms, and Ben, a resourceful orphaned boy who becomes his rider and closest companion. As the unlikely trio travels across unfamiliar lands in search of the Rim of Heaven, they are stalked by Nettlebrand, a monstrous, armor-plated dragon-hunter built from gold and driven to destroy every dragon he can find.

Notes

  • From the series record (Dragon Rider): Originally published in German as Drachenreiter (1997); a third book was announced by the author but has not been published. Confirmed a separate, unrelated universe from Funke's other admitted series, Inkheart and The Thief Lord.

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings, but they resolve to the exact same sequence for this book, so one combined line is shown instead of two identical ones.
