Synopsis
The second book in the Shadows of the Apt series follows the Wasp Empire's advancing military campaign against the Lowlands as the fortified city of Tark comes under direct assault, with the young fighters Salma and Totho among those preparing to defend its walls alongside their Ant-kinden allies. Meanwhile the political strategist Stenwold Maker, whose earlier warnings about the Empire have proven correct, finds that his outspokenness has made him a marked target for imperial agents seeking to silence him permanently, even as the Empire sets its sights on Collegium, the Lowlands' great center of learning, hoping its fall will crush any remaining resistance. Beneath the military campaign runs a darker thread, as the Empire's young Emperor quietly pursues an ambition of his own that could have consequences far beyond the current war.
