Synopsis
This novel interweaves two eras of Pern's history roughly four and a half centuries apart. In the earlier timeline, following the world's First Pass, geneticist Wind Blossom and her apprentice Tieran discover fire lizards and a dragon suffering from a strange illness they believe originated from the future, and they prepare hidden stores of scientific equipment and notes for whoever might need them later. Generations afterward, at the dawn of the Third Pass, a healer and artist named Lorana impresses the gold dragon Arith just as dragons and fire lizards across Pern begin dying from an almost universally fatal sickness. Searching for answers, Lorana finds the concealed chambers Wind Blossom left behind and must master unfamiliar technology in a race to produce a cure before the dragon population, and Pern's only defense against Thread, collapses entirely.
