Synopsis
Elantris opens in the kingdom of Arelon, home to the once-glorious city of Elantris, whose inhabitants were transformed into immortal, godlike beings until a mysterious event called the Reod stripped them of their power and left them cursed with a slow, incurable decay. Prince Raoden is struck by this same transformation, the Shaod, on the eve of his arranged marriage, and is secretly cast into the ruined city while his father tells the outside world he has died. Meanwhile his betrothed, Princess Sarene of Teod, arrives in Arelon for the wedding only to find herself considered a widow, and turns her attention to the kingdom's tangled politics. A third figure, the priest Hrathen, arrives with orders to convert Arelon to his faith within months or see it conquered. Unaware of each other's true circumstances, Raoden and Sarene each work separately to keep their kingdom from collapse.
