This novel follows Elminster, once the world's most powerful wizard but now mortal and aging after the goddess of magic's death. Forced to feed magical artifacts to his increasingly unstable lover to keep her sane, Elminster must navigate treacherous political conspiracies and assassination attempts while trying to prevent dangerous magical items from falling into the wrong hands in Cormyr.

Notes
- Elminster series #6; the final 3 volumes (Elminster Must Die, Bury Elminster Deep, Elminster Enraged) are also marketed as "The Sage of Shadowdale" trilogy, a continuous conclusion to the same reading order.
- From the series record (Elminster series): Ed Greenwood's 8-novel line about the setting's signature wizard Elminster Aumar (1994-2012); the final 3 volumes are also marketed as "The Sage of Shadowdale" trilogy, a direct continuation of the same reading order, not a separate series. Individual volumes registered 2026-08-18, completing a series stub that had been registered without them since the original admission.
Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
