Synopsis
A standalone Valdemar novel follows Alberich, a Karsite officer who has risen through his nation's military academies with unnatural speed thanks to a hidden psychic Gift, a talent his own people's Sunpriests treat as a demonic taint punishable by death. When the Sunpriests uncover his ability and move to execute him by fire, Alberich's white stallion carries him across the border into Valdemar, the enemy kingdom he was raised and trained to despise. Healed and taken in by the very people he once regarded as adversaries, Alberich is left with no way home and no certainty that he can ever belong among the Heralds who saved him, forcing him to confront what loyalty and honor mean once his old allegiances are no longer available to him.
