Synopsis
The second book of Alberich's story picks up with the former Karsite officer now established as Valdemar's Weaponsmaster, training the kingdom's Heralds despite lingering prejudice from those who cannot forget his origins as an enemy soldier. His new position brings him close to the young Queen Selenay, whom he is charged with protecting, and the story follows Alberich as he balances his official duties as both trainer and guardian against political tensions within the court. As Selenay faces pressures both public and personal, Alberich must consider whether the dangers threatening her come only from external enemies or whether he also needs to protect her from choices of her own heart, all while continuing to reconcile his identity as an outsider serving the kingdom that once was his enemy.
