Synopsis
The second novel in Steven Erikson's Kharkanas Trilogy continues the tragic downfall of the realm of Kurald Galain, unfolding amid a bitter, unrelenting winter and the outbreak of open civil war between rival factions. Urusander's Legion, now openly in revolt, prepares to march on the city of Kharkanas itself, while the rebellion's own scattered and uncertain opposition is gradually held together under the uneasy leadership of Silchas Ruin, as old loyalties fracture and new alliances form in the face of the realm's collapse, and figures who will loom large over the later Malazan age take their first, bloody steps onto the wider stage.
