Synopsis

Fated, the first novel in Benedict Jacka's Alex Verus series, introduces Alex Verus, a diviner who runs a small magic shop in Camden, North London, and whose unglamorous ability to glimpse possible futures makes him both useful and vulnerable in a magical world dominated by more overtly powerful mages. When an ancient and highly sought-after relic surfaces, Alex finds himself pursued by multiple factions eager to force him to open it, including dark mages, a faction within the ruling Light Council with its own hidden agenda, and a figure from his own past. Complicating his situation further, Alex has recently taken on an apprentice with a mysterious connection to the relic, one who also carries a dangerous curse that endangers anyone who gets close to her, leaving Alex trying to protect her while fending off the growing number of people determined to get to him.
