Synopsis

Cursed, the second Alex Verus novel, opens with Alex in a comparatively stable position, on reasonably good terms with the ruling Council and training his apprentice Luna, when a mysterious woman bursts into his shop being chased by a magical assassin. The encounter draws Alex into a dangerous conspiracy centered on a forbidden ritual designed to drain magical power from living victims, a secret that multiple parties are determined to control, including his old enemies Cinder and Deleo, a Council mage named Belthas, and a mercenary called Garrick. With at least one of these factions actively trying to have him killed and no way to be sure which, Alex must rely on his foresight to figure out whom he can trust while also managing Luna's safety and her growing romantic entanglement, all while the stakes of the ritual's secret keep escalating around him.
