Synopsis
The eighteenth Valdemar short-story anthology gathers twenty-one new stories plus a new novella by series creator Mercedes Lackey, with twenty-two authors in total contributing, including Jennifer Brozek, Fiona Patton, and Diana L. Paxson. Centered on the kingdom's Heralds, an ancient order of protectors bonded to telepathic Companions, the collection explores conflicts ranging from personal feuds to mysteries, with recurring characters appearing across multiple stories as part of ongoing miniseries. Highlights include a story in which the Herald-Mage Vanyel is enlisted in a clandestine mission involving noble families, a clash between rival bards, and a student who begins questioning visions with a supernatural source. As with the rest of the series, the anthology has no single overarching plot, instead offering a varied set of independent tales.
