Synopsis

The seventeenth Valdemar anthology takes as its theme problem-solving when the usual tools and resources are unavailable, gathering short stories that explore characters making do with limited means. Series creator Mercedes Lackey contributes the title story, joined by a mix of debut and established authors across twenty-one stories in total. The collection is set within the kingdom of Valdemar, protected by the Heralds, an ancient order of individuals bonded to telepathic, horse-like Companions and gifted with abilities such as Mindspeaking, FarSeeing, and Empathy. As with the rest of the anthology series, the stories are independent rather than forming a single plot, spanning tales of Heralds, animal Mindspeakers, healers, and foreseers who must find inventive solutions to the problems they encounter across the kingdom.
